If you pass through Gion at night, the sight of orange lanterns hanging down from the eaves and apprentice geishas scurrying for home will surely give you a sense of how Kyoto’s ambience varies with the time of day.

An ancient shrine built before Heian-kyo (the former name of Kyoto, it started from 794) has been thought to protect the city for thousands of years. It holds the Gion Festival every 17th of July and gathers hundreds of thousands of people. The festival is also known as one of Japan’s three major festivals. At night, you can also come to pray at the main hall, which provides a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
